Done to Death

A friend of mine wants to write his first choreography and asked if I would lend a hand. He told me the name of his song so that I could give a listen and help him fulfill his creative vision. As I was listening to it I found myself wondering how many other dancers have danced to this piece. Which then got my wheels turning and I had to ask... what songs have been done to death? What are the most widely danced to pieces of music in the genre of GBD? I'll tell you the number one around here is Living Dead Girl. :-P

First Pentaphobe album, Beat's Antique's Lantern, Maduro's Akkadian, Jill Tracy's Evil Night Together, Covus Corax's Filii Neidhardi, soooo much Dead Can Dance, Solace Cybele and the Nataraja remix...and I can't recall any more off of the top of my head @_@ But yeah, those are the first ones I thought of!

Venetian Snare's remix of Nina Simone. Marilyn Manson's take on "Tainted Love". anything that sounds gypsy/circus. (accordions, tinkling old music boxes, etc..)

#1 overused song for GBD: Dead Can Dance: The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegroove. Hands down. I have heard it EVERYWHERE, and I'm venture to bet that at at least 90% of the events I have attended, it's been used.

rofl. You know what? My very first attempt at choreographing was to that one song for my class. I never actually performed it. lol

I think that one thing that's real hard for new dancers is knowing which songs were overused. When you start, everything is shiny and you don't know that song XX has been done by virtually all belly dancers in the world or at least all dance circles in the world.

that's very true Celeste - newbies don't know, and some songs are very good for beginners to learn. So it's important to keep that in mind and maintain good social graces when presented with it!

In my regular classes, I've picked songs for my students to dance to that are overdone in the larger community, b/c they are just good songs, but I also know that they'd be presenting these songs mainly for a non-BD audience ;)

Once upon a time I was at an national belly dance festival and no less than three groups (and a fourth that didn't perform last minute) danced to filli neidhardi.

Great song but gah! : )

Actually, I don't mind songs being passed around the community as much if people take the song and do something really unique to it. Would I love to sit through a really innovative performance to four ton mantis? Yes, actually, I would...

I did some pondering on this last week. What I was thinking was along the lines of what Mavi is saying: I like different versions of dancing to a certain song. But, here's the catch, if I've seen it performed a lot already, you will have to work extra hard for me to love it. But I think that it is doable.

Here's my conundrum, though. I live in the Midwest and it seems that, with the exception of some tribal fusion staples like Pentaphobe and Beats Antique, everything else arrives here a few years later. I danced to Filii Neidhardi (yes, that infamous piece) like 2 years ago. No one had heard the piece yet and virtually no one had heard of Corvus Corax. Anyway, long story short, I happen to have CA tastes in a Midwest world... so, here (at least in IN), a lot of those pieces that were cited are unknown. So it's fine when I do them in front of folks here but, should there be a video of it posted, I'd like like Girl #Gazilliontoomanytimes.

Oh and, for the record, Simarik has definitely been done to death here too. For a few years, it seemed like it was done at every single show by different people...

I think Black by The Shroud is done to death...as well as a few Pucifer songs...as well as Living Dead Girl

I think my next solo is to Pretty Toy by VAC... :)

I'm new to belly dance, but I'm a Jurassic Goth. My first solo performance is coming up -- at ZombieCon -- and I have a dilemma. I need to do a GBD performance for a typically non-gothic crowd who is just "playing goth" for October. The con specifically requested vintage scary carnival and blood, so I'm doing a Victorian interpretation of Kali. I'll have a tribal-style fringe skirt of (skeletal) hands and a necklace of skulls, and a bindhi to signify the 3rd eye -- all sybols of the bloodthirsty protectress -- but there will also be rhinestones and burlesque ruffles and ostrich feathers in my hair.

I need music that has an East Indian feel, but is also haunting, and it needs to appeal to a "tourist" crowd. Nothing too modern-sounding will do, either, because of the show's theme. I was thinking Dead Can Dance, but this thread is making me doubt my choice. Do any of you have suggestions for a less played-out song that would fit my needs? Saturday is the cut-off for song submissions, but I have til Oct 17th to practice.

DCD has many great songs that aren't overused, and the most specific one on the overused list (Ub. Mr. LG) I don't see really matching a Victorian/Kali concept. Another option to consider is the group Vas - they have a lot of beautiful music that would work as well.

There are a few artists I have on my personal "never perform to" list. That's Switchblade Symphony, Covenant, Rob Zombie and Dead Can Dance. I have seen a lot by them done into the ground. I also attempt to steer away from Beats Antique, Maduro and Pentaphobe. Though I love listening to all three of the artists - performances are done into the ground.

I saw someone once do a performance to "Where the Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave. That was one I hadn't heard before.

I'm fortunate that my boyfriend is a drum and bass DJ. He also gets other electronic tunes that can carry over into tribal and gothic belly dance. Gets a lot of darkstep, dubstep, and some EBM and experimental stuff. I like to grab those from the smaller artists and use them.

There is one song I'd like to work on one of these days, it's "This is not a clubtrack" by Faderhead.

Yeah, unfortunately Rob Zombie was REQUESTED by the con admin, too. I knew that anything by him was overplayed, so I luckily got out of it, but one of my troupe members is doing the House of 1000 Corpses theme... which admittedly does fit for zombie hordes. I guess that is the problem with performing for mundane audiences who are trying to "goth out" for Halloween.

Thanks to my 15 year old son, as musically various as I am, just up on the 'new stuff,' I have found Kernfraft 400 and Hollywood Undead.

I have to admit I have danced to Rob Zombie, but the instrumental *if you can call it that but I think you get what I mean* pieces. Can't wait for the new album! Sorry to get off track. Anyways, I've danced to Pentaphobe and Beats Antique, but like one dancer already mentioned here in good ol' WV no one knows those artists and if they do its few and far between. I've also dance to Marilyn Manson and no one here had ever used "Tainted Love" to my knowledge, but I love him so I used him. My performance differed from those that I had seen, so I had no problem dancing to those songs because I wanted to, so I did.

Believe me I understand not wanting to do something that has been over done, but can you ever really make something original? I've branched out into my own musical world a lot lately, so I don't really have a fear of doing something that has been done, but then again if XX dancer has used the song I'm using (without my knowledge until I happen to float around YouTube two months later) and she's from like......the Ukraine or something, what do I care? 'Cause I guarantee the people here in WV have NEVER seen her video or know the music to it. Not saying that people here are ignorant (those people are EVERYWHERE) but they tend to stick to the same artists, so what's been done to death in metropolitan areas has never been done here.

I digress. I would attempt to stay away from certain songs, but then again if you are feeling it you should go for it! You are you own dance agenda and no one else. :-)

P.S. The songs I NEVER dance to are the ones that I've seen done by certain famous dancers that I know I would NEVER be able to get done right because their performance to it happened to be PERRRRRFECT. :-p
