What Breed of Goth?

So the Old School Goth Thread has inspired me to ask... What kind of Goth is every one? (If this has already been done in recent memory just humor me anyway...)

Given the description of Old School Goth... I doubt I fall in that camp.
I honestly have no idea what category I belong to. I'm just going to call myself a beautiful, brainy, fantasy Goth. If there's a proper term for that just let me know.

Old and creaky! But I like all sorts of aspects of goth, it's just that old school is where I left my blackly beating heart when I tore it from my chest lo those many years ago. ;-)

Old school all the way...have been for the last 20+ years (bit long in the tooth, I am!). Hopelessly Romantic with a capital R, listening for spirits in the wind and spouting Keats when the occasion calls for it. Wearing black velvet at this very moment.

I'm not sure what breed of goth I am..... or hell, if I'm goth at all. ;) I've called myself a 'closet goth' due to the fact that I've denied that side for so long... trying to be what everyone else wanted or expected me to be. High school and college were the grunge years but an ex-bf and I used to go out walking the cemeteries at night... so we didn't really fit in. I would sit in my room and draw and write moody poetry. lol. Its been a while since I had time to do that kind of stuff.

Now, I'm finally starting to feel comfortable in my skin so maybe I'm coming out of the goth closet... (ooohh look at the pretty corsets and black hats!)..... though I can't really put a title on myself except maybe VisiGoth (chuckle to those who knows where that comes from and why) ;D

I think I'm really more of a fan of goths than a true goth... My husband is very old-school; it's really only since I met him that black has come to occupy a significant role in my wardrobe. I'm most drawn to the intellectual/literary style of goth, but though I'm not quite well enough read to pull it off myself. My musical taste is industrial shading towards metal, however. My fashion sense leans mostly towards skanky ;).

I guess I fall on the romantigoth/gypsy goth scale of things. With a touch of steampunk on occasion.

old school with a pinch of 'mommy' though I have my son asking me why I wear black all of the time and asking me to dress 'normal' when I go into his school (wtf?~~where did HE come from??!!)

I get comments like that from my sons.... although I think they like it really (or maybe that's just wishful thinking?!!). Quite often it's just that 'raise the eyes to heaven' thing they'll do, y'know that one?

Pyro! Ah haa haa, get ready for some fruity shit from the kids....my son now 20 , decided its not worth trying to be like the others....and is into some very serious rat rod, greaser, car customizing that he totally rocks to. I'm pretty sure I gave birth to the next Big Daddy Roth. Poor kid has it in his blood......and they say Goths don't usually raise Goth children (dark grin)...they just need a chance to experience what the "norms" are like. Thats the scary part. He could give a crap now, and still Luvs Mumsy like MAD.

I am, according to the quiz, "New Agey Goth."

When I was 7, it was called angry... When I was 12 it was called depressed... When I was 16 all of my friends referred to me as their "Goth Friend"... When I was 18 my mom gave up trying to hide my black cloak and my dog choke chain. ::shrug::

My husband and I call it life.

    Society calls it Goth.

    Meh.

OMG!!! I so recognize that. Angry, depressed, even antisocial. The strange girl, the dark girl. That became "goth".

I guess I am of the darkest of breedings, with a touch of love for lace and lacings, as I said before. ;D There also is a splash of cyber in me.

The more I think about this, the more I realize it's too difficult to make clean categories here... I don't fit into any ONE of them.

I KNEW there was a quiz out there for 'goth types'!!! Thanx Obi!

Uumm.... I'm an elitist bastard (thats bitch, thank you very much!)

You are an elitist bastard. You hate people that try too hard, actually you just hate people in general. You have excellent taste in alcohol, however, and probably have an excellent collection of classical and experimental music.

Not sure if I agree with this (although I do hate people in general), but hey, whatever.

Try this one on: my department was giving out pseudo-awards (Most Anal Desk Top, Best Dressed Under Stress, silly shit like that) and I won "Department Flower Child"!!!!

I've known hippies. I've been friends with hippies...but, sir...I am no hippy.

So true! I think everyone's here is very unique and is genuinely likely to sprawl across several categories!

It Said that I'm New Agey...
"Bet you practice Wicca or Paganism or possibly more liberal Christianity. You probably love Dead Can Dance, anything ethereal, and might be vegetarian. You probably also like to hug people."

I'm a Roman Recon but if that's New Agey then so is Santeria.
I won't try to hide on the music... I do love wailing women.
I am a Vegetarian. (But damn it I love meat!)
I do not like hugs! I'm Xenophobic! I barely hug people that I know really really well!

I guess it seems right but it sure doesn't sound like fun. I always pictured myself as more of a Freak. Then again some people have really pushed the bar of Freak way up there so maybe I don't qualify anymore...

The survey said I'm a New Agey Goth, too... I prefer the term "Spiritual Goth," which conjures images of Aleister Crowley/Coleridge-type mysticism, spellcraft, and an obsession with the unknown. I do practice Wicca but witches are not hippies, darn it all, just because we care about recycling!!

I pretty much hate most everyone..lmao

      okay, I don't HATE everyone but I have a strong general dislike for the masses......and kids..I don't like kids...but I love mine, he's rad...

My Goth-atude has mellowed in the last few years but I'm still an old school Elder Goth regardless of outward appearances..I've just become apathetic about showing anyone how GOTH I am..lol

Night goth which is pretty acurate. My wardrobe has gotton quite colorful since I discovered Playalicious playa wear but I still very much enjoy my blackest of black wear, my corset, my big gurl stompy boots and a night of some really stompin goth/industrial music RAWR!!!!

Unforunately my varied tastes in music (listening to The Clashs Sandinista as I type) got me kicked out of Goth circles. And I am too ecclectic for quizes. Oh, you will have to love me or hate me as I am. A lover of the Dark, but not scary enough on the surface to pass.
  • Re: What Breed of Goth?

    Wed, November 14, 2007 - 12:27 PM
According to the quiz i'm a New Age goth, which is pretty far off-base as I have a very VERY low tolerance for cheese.

I've always called myself a Weekend Goth; I like dressing up and dancing to goth music, and I like how everybody at Goth clubs is usually so self-absorbed they don't bother you while you dance. ;) But I wear lots of other things and am not in the least depressive or angsty.

I miss the good old days before the local Goth club was replaced by a Starbucks...there are a few others that play goth on certain nights but there's always an inexplicable number of guys in sports jerseys, and the one tiny 'official' goth club is a total dive. :P Nobody ever plays Sisters of Mercy, either. I loves me some Eldritch.

You're talking about Sanctuary! I miss that place too.

so the survey says I'm a New Age Goth...hmmm...raised Roman Catholic but a bit of a panentheist; yes I love Dead Can Dance, vegetarian, yes, hug people a lot...guess I can't argue with that.

        sighs...

I *heart* Andrew Eldritch as well...when I saw Sisters in Dallas a while back, I thought my date would have to mop up the puddle I'd become..

definitely old school goth. i've been doing this for 26 years and counting...black lace and velvet...bauhaus was still around then! anyhow, the survey said i was new age goth..ok i sort of agree on most. i just don't like to hug people. not touchy feely. better than i used to be but still not my thing. too "self absorbed" i guess ;)
  • Re: What Breed of Goth?

How about newly converted goth? :D

No, okay, seriously... I've been a dark industrial tribal fusion girl for most of my performing years but I'm getting more and more into the truly gothic dancing (which I know isn't a far cry away from dark/industrial tribal fusion, but whatever). So I guess if I haaaaad to label myself I'd go with industro-goth. (Ha.)

In my non-dancing life? I'm a total mundane - not ashamed to admit it - with a passion for body mods. I wear dark clothing because it flatters me in all aspects. Am I goth? Mmm... nope. Calling me goth would be like calling a camellia a rose because it's kinda similar... but not quite. I guess you could say my dance alter-ego is my evil twin. ;)

Hmmm....All I can think is that I'm an 'emotional/internal goth'. You wouldn't think that I have gothy tendences by looking at me but I feel this massive heart-swelling whenever I hear the music, see the dance. It's what I relate to above all genres.

Well, then you are a true goth...its really not a fashion statement...although it artisticly is how alot of us choose to relate to each other....and yes it is fun, but it is truly an internal thing.....I think the fashion thing lends itself more to a very young experimental crowd. Assimilation into the mainstream of society is often considered a sell out by the young Gothic culture.....however, most of the highly intellegent people I know in the Goth community don't see this as a problem, because it truly is an internal thing..... Does that mean I fit that Elitist Bastard thing?

Hehe, I hate labels and pigeon holing but I suppose i'm old school, used to go to the Barrel Organ in Digbeth, Birmingham, UK - first went there when I was sweet 16. When it comes to music I like all types (with a few exeptions lol). I'm 35 and get called an 'Emo'. Anyone can put on a black dress - that doesn't make them goth! Goth is mainly an attidude, a way of life - not something for the weekend. It is also a hard thing to explain to someone who is narrow minded (Jo public lol).

Be who you are, regardless of what that may be.

            Love and Blessings.

I refer to Myself as an Aristogoth... trying to find outfits that might have been appropriate to a Victorian era minor noble, or perhaps gentry from an older time. since I haven't the talents at the sewing machine and am too cheap to buy the good outfits available (at $95 per shirt) I stick to more modern outfits for My gothdom... slacks and jacket, tie, vest, shiny shoes, that sort of thing. tends to be a bit cheaper, and more easily blends into some of modern society's expectations, while the darkness remains within.

Well according to Obsidia's quiz thingie, I am a New Agey Goth, and I'm not surprised. I dont' really consider myself goth, although I am definitely a fan of gothy people. I love the clothing, the style, the feeling when I go to gothic clubs, and I love the music although I have no clue who is singing or even what the bands are called. However, my previous career path always kept me from ever showing it......in fact, one time many many years ago, I brought an absolutely beautiful picture to work of a well painted vampire lady holding a bouquet of roses and set it on my desk, and before the day was out, I'd been written up for it (some puss in the office was offended by it) and told to take it home.

Lately I have begun to allow myself to explore and love that darker lady again, now that I have kicked my old career choice to the curb and embraced a more creative path.....so who knows :)
