Well in our soggy and muggy home we have "BellyCraft" led by Alicia, ( www.BellyCraft.com )who lurked and dwelled amongst Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids in their early Florida days. She actually hung out with them.

BellyCraft just kicked some hard ass at Tribal Solstice 2. Their style is Gothic Industrial, with very firm roots in Tribal Style, sharp clean technique and a presence that blows you away. They are beating their very own special drum. And although I became of age in the days of the Cure, let's just say I would have been afraid of these girls when I was a kid. :)

Enjoy, this is what's happening in South Florida and BellyCraft is inspiring so many others everywhere.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if4QXatKhwU

As for me, I enjoy all of the Gothic Style performances and then return to my skirts and cholis for some fun improv, or world fusion. I get a ride out of watching Goth Bellydance just the same. I'm happy to see bellydance morph into all the imaginable possibilities.

Not one to generally have my finger on the collective pulse (I generally march to the beat of my own crazy little drummer, I'm afraid) I'll still chime in here to second what Badriya says about darker bellydance being well-appreciated here.

I'm teaching beginning and intermediate classes, both filled here in Salem (I moved to the Boston area from Maine this spring----Salem to be exact: Witch City USA!)... more starting soon in Gloucester as well. And a workshop hosted by Phoenix in August, and more...so yes, students are interested :)

Looking forward to Raks Spooki as always...and looking forward to more of the summer thunderstorms that are expected in the Boston area today...;)

GBD is in its infancy in Australia, but there is definitely a lot of interest. Here in Brisbane we are blessed to have the dark and lovely Saahira Ravyn leading the way with her own special style. She is just starting to form a GBD Troupe, which is exciting news.

Go Boston!
And just a little west of Boston - out in good ole' WOOSTA, dancers are becoming much more interestd in GBD. I've re-started my GBD classes out here and have a student coming down from NH...another down from northern MA for classes. So I'd say it's going pretty well!

Some of the Mayurichaal ladies went to New City Compound, which is (or was?) Edmonton's goth bar, when we were up there a couple of years back. Seemed like a pretty good scene. I've been told there's a monthly goth/industrial/metal night here called Chimera... I'll have to look into the Warehouse (or you can let me know if you feel like hunting for it :) ). Though I kinda feel like my clubbing days are a bit behind me... /sigh.

Welp, here in Boston and environs I would say GBD is thriving--there's several talented performers, many interested dancers/students, and I'm pleased to say I'll be putting on the *third* annual Raks Spooki this October, an all gothic belly dance show this year featuring the return of Tempest to Boston as our featured workshop instructor.

Also I'd like to note that in the 30 seconds it took me to type that, a wild thunderstorm has come up out of nowhere. Coincidence? Hmmm...

Well Tempest, as you know, things are pretty good out here in Southern Cali. Goth BD seems to be quite popular- can't throw a stone it seems without hitting a gothling. I guess that's good. There certainly seem to be a lot of interpretations as to what constitutes a GBD performance. There will probably be many of those interpreations at the upcoming Punk Raqs show in June. Even my little troupe will be performing in it! Though it will definately be less goth and more "saucy-industrial-EBM-tarts." Improv no less. I'm getting a bit skerrd.....

There's really not a gothic bellydance "scene" in Philly. There's Tempest out at the shore and some dancers scattered through the Philly area (including me and Jaz), but the main teachers are cabaret and the main tribal fusion improv teachers are those from Hipnosis.

Here in Nashvegas TN, I'm trying to keep a foot in both the traditional and the darker side, both of which are lacking in my opinion. I'm currently on the battlefront to get a generic class up and running at a place where I've been told that the director actually laughed at the idea of having a belly dance class, but that's before a prospective teacher actually contacted him, so we'll see. On the side I'm working on a dark carnival themed club night with performers of all kinds (including a generous helping of dark and tribal fusion belly dance, an aerial contortionist very possibly, arts and crafts vendors, a live band, and DJs), but it's had it's ups and downs already. An industrial DJ who is a friend of mine is being very supportive, another local DJ flat turned me down even though I'm offering everybody a cut, and I'm still recovering from that. But I've got some great performers lined up so far so I'm trying to keep my head up, and I'm hoping the event goes over well enough to generate some more interest in the darker arts. As far as other goth bd-ers in the area, I think there are a few, scattered, and hopefully we'll run into each other at some point because I think we could all use support from each other.

Pulse free here so far as I am aware. I know they exist as students but the only performers I know in the Goth scene are old students of mine and I don't think they perform anymore. A little bit North of me there's quite a bit larger of a scene but just in going to the local clubs and performances... nada spooky lil peep. I shall go clubbing tomorrow and inquire of the wherebouts of my long lost spooky brethren.

Well in Chicago it looks like its growing! Which I was quite excited about. It seems like more Gothic Bellydancers are coming out. What excited me the most was when I noticed a Gothic Bellydance class open up at a school I really want to go to. [I can't cuz of the sadistic regime at my job...] There is even Dark Cabaret!! I attended a workshop with Peresphone's Daughter! And I loved that too. Though currently the class I do go to. My teacher shuns GBD. She thinks its silly and she is very stuck on traditional ATS. Though I find it a touch contradictory when she puts on a Halloween show and very much looks like GBD. But who's being picky. So i get to be the akward duckling in the bunch, knowing that I might never be invited to dance with the student troupe because of my difference in opinion and style. [She asked me once before...but I disagreed on the costuming...and that was that.] So I don't think her opinion is the one of the massive amounts of bellydancers here in Chicago. I think its awesome there is such a scene in this area! I thought I was the only one. Come to find out there is a bunch more here than I could ever expect! :D

Still looking forward to the workshops in July @ Detriot! So soo excited!

Okay, I live and work in Lodi, CA (yes, the same Lodi mentioned in the Credence Clearwater Revival song...) and I am the only Tribal or GBD performer/instructor in my area. The closest for Tribal is Sacramento and Unmata but there are no other GBDs within 100 miles it seems.

I also perform with the fire troup Obsidian Butterfly and everything I do in that group is related to GBD as well, so I'm trying really hard to get the word out! I do like being the only Gothic one though, I feel I have more freedom of expression that way...

Back in the day (tm) Edmonton seemed to be a bit more Goth friendly than Calgary did - even though Calgary has the big arts college which tended to attract the darker artsy set. They all used to lurk around White ave and the U of A area coffee shops, and the fountain at the Legislature. :0)

I have no idea what clubs are around Edmonton these days, but afaik the Warehouse is still up and running in Cow Town. Somebody should still have a message board, I can try and track it down for you if you are interested?

My ATS teacher in Saskatoon (Saskatcewan, Canada) was an old-school goth, and we mused about doing gothic pieces but never found the time (despite the fact that the owner of the local goth club knows us both and would've put us on stage any time we wanted). Although Calgary, the city I'm in now is four times the size, it seems distinctly goth-deficient (maybe I just don't know the right people here... I hope). Ariellah did a workshop not too far away last fall (which I missed and am still kicking myself for missing), but I don't know if that's spawned anything else. The teacher I'm with now is perhaps a little darker fusion, but not what I would call goth.

Well, here in Smallsboring, North Cackalacky I pretty much am GBD. No one here is into it. There really aren't very many goths in this area to begin with. But I do my best, bringing the darkness everywhere I go. People are becoming more receptive to it I think. I will have them under my spell before long. Charlotte has a little better scene, when I can get up there to dance with my evil friends in that realm.

GBD and all its sub-genres are alive and well in the DC Metro area. Dark belly dance in general is thriving around these parts. We have a whole myriad of performers that showcase industrial pieces, spooky carbaret performances, dark tribal and creepy fusion. Even our troupe Mortifera has brought death rock into the mix. I don't see DC "dying" anytime soon. Wait...does that make us less goth? X-D

DC is ANGRY! LOL... ok... well, maybe only on stage. But there's definitely an industrial, gritty, aggressive trend here in DC. I love it. I think we're all influenced by each other's performances and work, but I think we make the distinction between inspiration and copying, which is great! Even though I might not classify all of our pieces as "Gothic", I, Shakra, Eugenia, and Romka all performed aggressive, dark pieces at Tribal Fest this year, and yet they were all very different in execution. I think that's attributable to the fact that we're all friends, we all hang out together, and we have a pretty tight community here.

North Eastern Pa it is deader than any corpse. Unfortunately, people around here don't understand goths let along GBD. Bellydance in general is still quite shocking around here and many people still associate it with stripping (though I honestly don't understand that).

Instead of going all out GBD, I'm trying the 'dark tribal' aspect of getting people more used to both tribal and goth. We'll see how that goes.

Here in the cold North, where civilization still is in its infancy, the mission to paint the bellydance scene darker and darker has made some progress this year. Not only do my, and other teachers' students, cryyyyyyyy for workshops and classes. In Stockholm, where their only ever contact with the fenomenon was my performance last year, my class was full and more at the Stockhom Bellydance Festival (very traditional Egyptian festival otherwise...).

Since I'm the only teacher around here teaching GBD I'm trying to create diversity and get the students to express their own feelings of darkness.

What's bad around here is the "oh, here's a new thing I must get myself into" and we get the usual stuff like black bedlahs and eyeliner and traditional bellydancing labelled as goth. Or some twitches to metal music and they call it GBD... And there is one teacher who said she should try to teach "a little of that" since it's so "cool". I welcome more teachers over here, it's getting a bit lonely, but I'd like them to be serious about it and not just use it as the new thing to make money from.

Ummmm....nothing happening on this home front. However, I have been more and more into creating dark pieces lately (I have been Tribal-Fusion since I started dancing) I just have to find the time to show them off. :-) I am hoping someone might see them and take interest in it! I'm not a gothic bellydancer, but I think I am going into dark fusion as of right now. I hope they are going to be received well.

Gothic bellydance is starting to come out a little more in my Oregon community. There's one professional dancer who delves into the Gothic occasionally, but doesn't do Gothic bellydance 100% of the time. There are two girls I recently saw at a student night who in their duet performance style seem to be a little more into the darker fusion, edging into Gothic fusion. Another girl, the student of a local teacher, is verrrrry Gothy in her solo performance style, and she's showing a lot of promise. Then there's me - I tend to do darker fusion edging into full-on Gothiness depending on the song being choreographed and my mood.

My boss said that to me yesterday...I believe she meant that I have a live connection with fashion trends (if you don't know, I'm a fashion jewelry designer by day), but at that moment, with my head congested and foggy as hell, that's about the last thing I was thinking physically :)

But, despite the Gothic stereotype, yes, we do indeed have pulses, and I thought this would be a good segway for folks to chime in on the current state of Gothic Bellydance in their community. What's going on/not happening? What are the style/movement trends for your area? What do you feel is good/bad?
