I was looking at my music the other day and I realized that most of my gothic music is getting to be quite old. Most of the stuff I have is 80s to 90s era. I'm trying to find a couple songs for me to do as performance pieces. I figure that if I do older music it will turn people off since they've heard it and seen it so many times.
The new music that I've been getting is mainly symphonic metal (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica), Electronica (Maduro, Solace), indie (Cruxshadows, Lacuna Coil), Industial (Skinny Puppy, Apoptygma Berzerk), and traditional belly dance music (Hossam Ramzy, Hakim).
There really isn't much of a scene where I live so I haven't been to the clubs or really had a chance to talk to people about what they're listening to these days.
I used to be involved in the scene in Manhattan (that's Kansas not NY) before it collapsed about 8 years ago. I recently learned that there's a small group of very young goths (teens with a couple of college agers) that are trying to get the scene started again and went to one of their gatherings. When I talked music I was pretty shocked with what I heard is considered gothic music these days. I said that I mainly listened to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Switchblade Symphony, and Dead Can Dance. The repsonse that I got tended to be "how can you listen to that emo poser s**t". Is it true that those groups and that type of sound is considered emo and not gothic these days? They said that groups like Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Taylor Swift are what are reaaly big in the scene these days. Is this true?
If that's what's considered goth then I'll take my emo poser stuff and if not could all of you give me the names of some new goth groups?
Thanks,
Frank

Um, WTF were they smoking? That's mainstream manufactured pop-crap.
And Emo's wouldn't even know who Bauhaus and Switchblade are..

Re: New gothic music
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 8:34 AMlong emo answer:
i still listen to my old dcd and the music holds up amazingly well even almost twenty years on. i'm a child of the 80s. back in my art institute days we were very aware of goth as an expression of what was the dark emerging hiv/aids epidemic. that disease took the most creative of people in fashion, art and design, and the music began to sound like the dirges of the black plague. strangely comforting in a dark and mournful sense. but as hiv became more treatable it seems art and music lost the painful edge. at the same time goths began putting rules on who was dramatic enough to join their club. a lot of goths left the scene when they saw themselves judging others while they always fought against such judgements before. some goths wanted to smile and have some nondramatic fun without worrying the world was dying all around.
but i digress. i don't mind that goth music doesn't much exist because to me it represents a sort of progress in medicine. hiv/aids is treatable. 24/7 drama is a pain.
that said the closest to new goth in my collection would be collide, jill tracy perhaps... i always end up going back into the labyrinth though.

My first thought was WHAT? Your kidding me right.. To me these new age gothies sound like they have no clue.
I listen to alot of the same music you do.
Check out Azam Ali. www.myspace.com/azamali

Tue, July 21, 2009 - 12:36 PMAzam Ali's band, Niyaz, is also quite good.
There are also a lot of bands from outside of the goth genre, such as Massive Attack, Amon Tobin, and DJ Shadow, that do some very nice danceable darker music.
those kids were joking, I hope.

Tue, July 21, 2009 - 7:06 PMThanks for the replies. I'll check out the music choices you gave. I'm sure it'll give me a lot of great new material.
As far as the "goths" in Manhattan I got more from one of the mothers that my wife and I ran into while we were shoping there this afternoon. It appears that the group are all friends that suddenly became "goth" one day last fall. Apparently they figured that dressing in black and being dark and mysterious would get them more attention and popularity at school. Aside from that they're still typical pop culture teens. Glad to hear that they're not really what the gothic subculture is turning into.
Any other musical suggestions? -

Re: New gothic music
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 8:47 PMHm...
I consider the Cruxshadows gothic, though many don't. Lacuna Coil is gothic metal, actually a lot of what I listen to is gothic metal. Mandragora Scream is seriously goth metal...
Omnia is neo-pagan celtic folk music, which some of my eldergoth friends enjoy.
Mankind is Obsolete is pretty cool gothy dance/industrial music. I forgot about them actually! www.myspace.com/mankindisobsolete
anyway, the new "goths" who don't understand the premise of being gothic are blips on the radar to me, just people who are still trying to discover who they are.

Re: New gothic music
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 6:03 PMWhy not dance to the older stuff? If that's what really moves you go for it! And sometimes revisiting an older but better song can be much more refreshing than dancing to something just because it's now popular. Dance to your passion.
