So, last time I had to buy a costume I lived in Miami. Now I am here in Illinois and there's no place in the area to shop. I'm wondering if anyone has any online recommendations for what I need. Here's the specifics...some pieces I'll be making. (Yes, i cross posted. Sorry for any tribe spam!)
* Flared yoga/jazz pants
* Bum cover or ruffle or half skirt (depending on what you call it)
* Belt...the belt is iffy yet. I know I want a "standard" tribal style belt but I may make something to go with it or tassles.
Next...my hair! The last time I danced, my hair was hip length. Let's fast forward to now. I've cut it off and given the hair to Locks of Love. I now have a graduated bob. Can't very well put falls in those! I can't even gather enough for a small ponytail. What do I do with it? I was thinking making something to clip some small pieces of hair into it or maybe just popping a decorative clip in it. Any suggestions?

Re: Grrr Costume and Hair!
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 7:45 AMMany of the women I dance with drive the 2 - 4 hours just to shop in Chicago. Just start inquiring and looking. Chicago has it's cultural areas like any large city.
My hair isn't much longer than yours, part it, twist / roll it until you have two small buns on each side of your head. Fasten buns, then add falls. Just like in my 'photo.' -

Sun, July 26, 2009 - 2:47 PMI was thinking of making the drive to Chicago or St. Louis. I live much closer to St. Louis than Chicago. I did some searching on Ebay but the clothing I found didn't look like good quality. Anyone have any luck on Etsy?
thanks for the tips on the hair. I have never had hair so short. I have no idea what to do with it now! *laughs* -

Mon, July 27, 2009 - 8:46 AMEtsy is awesome... I buy most of my stuff from there.
In St. Louis, there are a bunch of belly dance stores, including Red Camel who have tribal jewelry and there is a props store too.
In Chicago, there is an Indian district that has apparently some amazing finds. I've never been to it but some friends have and I love the stuff that they have gotten from there. You may want to post on either the Chicago Belly Dance tribe or Blue Fire Tribe tribe about places to go shop in Chicago... people in the know would be on those. -

Sun, August 2, 2009 - 6:43 PMFear not, Raya. There is hope.
All your heady needs can be taken care of at you local Walmart. Purchase the following:
- aluminum foil
- mop
- can of black spray paint
- box of bobby pins.
Voila! Hair.
...This message has been brought to you by the Functionally Retarded and Dr. Phil. Same difference. -

Sun, August 2, 2009 - 11:21 PMOh Oh oh! Have to do my utmost to plug ze loverly Christina of Black Lotus Clothing! She has a website and an etsy store. She's also here on tribe. The ruffle she could give you in TONS of choices and styles! If you don't see anything you like (though I think you'd have to be an odd person not to like something she makes ;-p) then you can ask her to make something! Though she doesn't have anything up right now she does make pretties for lots of our famous bellydancers! The best way to contact her is through her e-mail on her website.
