Good day to all,
My daughter Jessica is very interested in becoming a gothic belly dancer. My daughter is very talented; she write poems, bellydances, artist and very much gothic. Jessica is 13 years old and has a great since of humor about life, but in a dark kinda way. With my best freind, which is a belly dancer teacher, my sister and I, which are all belly dancer and dummer (dumbek). I was wondering if you all can help me, about ways that my daughter can become a gothic belly dancer? I am also gothic too.
Sincerely Roy J. Griner

Sat, March 14, 2009 - 12:52 PMI think most people here would agree that a lot of gothic bellydance comes from a personal style: taking the bellydance skills you already have and blending those with the look, music, and atmosphere of your choosing. Have her continue her dancing and take it in her own direction.
That being said, there is a video I like to share with friends considering making the plunge. Tempest did a video for WordDance New York called "Belly Dance for Beautiful Freaks" that is very useful. She covers a lot of topics, from how to modify your movements to work in platform boots to how to capture fun evil expressions. Plus she teaches dance movements to Skinny Puppy, and you can't beat that.

Ariellah and Ashara both also have videos through WorldDance that have a heavy goth flair, but Tempest's is the only one that really discusses style, and I would highly recommend it for her. -

Oh, and also, I would look to see what gothic style dancers/troupes are in your area. A lot of dancers teach... just contact whoever you find until you find someone doing weekly classes. -
