Thanks a bundle for your help...we had a practise yesterday and I went for a victorian vamp look and it felt much more comfortable (somewhat ironically!) and everything is coming together. Now...I can't wait.

Hi, glad you're coming to Belfast - I'm the teacher, and am really looking forward to it. I would think it'll be a bit difficult to move in a real corset, but the hotpants sound great. Also if you haven't danced in heels before - I agree - practise!!! I would say, wear whatever you are comfortable in, if you're comfortable with your dance, have a goth attitude and can move easily in your costume thats the main thing. A few dress rehearsals maybe so you're happy with your costume.

Years ago I danced a duet with Kay to some techno in red pvc hotpants, with a red cabaret bra and belt, black fishnets and Doc Martin boots, Kay had a similar outfit but in shiny turquoise. It was great fun. I'm sure the night will be loads of fun, (I'm not a hugely serious person) so my humble advice would be, have a good practise then on the night just relax and enjoy it.

My problem is being really used to the sparkly bra and long skirt aspect of bellydance, and even a lot of the gothic dancers use a variation on this theme....Want to make sure it's bellydance not burlesque.

ditto, dancing in heels, especially if they're lower than 2-3" is much different than walking them, and they may restrict your level changes and footwork...

Hi there, I have dancing for just over a year now and have been a lifelong admirer of all things gothic, so I was so excited when our teacher announced we were to have a gothic themed dance night here in Belfast. I'm just preparing my routine now...have danced a solo once before but it was to Roots Manuva and Coldcut's True Skool so it was a sort of Egyptian/Indian mix. For my solo I have chosen to do a quite cabaret version of The Dresden Doll's My Alcoholic Friends. I was so inspired by Tempest's routine to Evil Night Together, it was dark yet witty, I hope to bring some of that to my performance.I'm just having some thoughts about costuming. I want to do an Amanda Palmer style look, she of lead singer of Dresden Dolls fame, but still keep it as something I could dance in and to make my moves look. There'll be lots of hip bumps, shoulder shimmies and other fast (but not hugely difficult moves). I was thinking of a corset style top, hotpats with a burlesque style bustle and maybe even Amanda style stripey stockings with heeled mary janes. What do you think? I've never danced in heels before, and have only really used more traditional cabaret style costuming. Any advice at all would be fab ;)
