Happy New Year!

Wow folks, 2009 has come and gone, and we're here looking 2010 in the face, and there's a lot of exciting things to look forward too!

What do you have in store? Post it!

News from me: I will be cutting back on my travel schedule for 2010 (no long regional/nationwide tours this year), because last month I landed a most awesome job as a trend fashion jewelry designer for the top fashion jewelry company in the US. It means that while I won't be able to travel as much (mainly doing weekend events), I will be able to enjoy the dance events I do attend a lot more! But this means less opportunity to study with me - so be sure to make a note on your calendar so you don't miss out! The big events on my schedule - that I can announce - are:

-I'll be vending at 3rd Coast next week in TX - if you'll be there, LMK!

-Feb 6th - Temple Con, teaching and performing in Warwick, RI - http://www.templecon.org/

-Feb 13th - Nouveau Noir Romantique @ The Dancing Gypsy teaching and performing in Spencer, MA - http://www.thedancinggypsy.com

-March 5th-7th - Gothla US - Pomona, CA - teaching, performing, vending, and more! This is the THIRD Gothla US, and it IS the largest event for Gothic Bellydance in North America - it is THE event to attend if you're into Gothic Bellydance, Dark Fusion, Steampunk, etc - with 12 instructors, 2 days of festival performances, vending, gala show, live music, and much more. The performer app deadline is approaching quickly - 1/15 - and workshops are filling up! Get your spot at http://www.gothla.us

-May 1st-2nd - Spring Caravan - Somerset, NJ - teaching, vending, performing - http://www.rakkasah.com/spring/

-May 12th-16th - Tribal Fest 10 - Sebastopol, CA - teaching, vending, performing - and specifically, offering a very special 6 hour intensive focusing deeply on the Art of Gothic Bellydance for performance-minded dancers - full details at http://blacksheepbellydance.com/tf10/index.html

-September 16th-19th - 4 day long Gothic Bellydance Intensive in Houston, TX - hosted by Khandroma! http://www.khandroma.net/

- more exciting things to come in the Summer and Fall - TBA soon!

You can follow the details, join the mailing list, etc at http://www.darklydramatic.com

Invoking the Dark Goddess with Aepril Schaile

From Dina at The Dancing Gypsy:

"FRIDAY NOVEMBER 13:
INVOKING THE DARK GODDESS WITH AEPRIL SCHAILE.
7:00 - 8:30 WORKSHOP.
GUIDED RITUAL AT 9PM.

This November, the occurrence of Friday the 13th falls within the Dark of the Moon, a perfect occasion to connect to the Dark Feminine within us! On this auspicious night during the Season of the Witch, Aepril Schaile "An American Priestess of the Dark Goddess" will take you on a deeply profound Underworld journey using bellydance, story, and myth. Through moving meditation, improvisation, and choreography, we will express the powers of the sacred Dark Feminine archetypes. Experience Medusa, Kali, Hecate, Circe, Persephone, Lilith; the 'Witch' energy within you; and the ability to shape-shift. You will come away with a fresh sense of authenticity, power, and grace in your dance, and a connection to ancient & timeless energies. This workshop is for beginner through advanced dancers, and is not so much about technique as it is about the journey we will share. After the workshop, stay for our guided Dark Moon ritual, where participants will dance the mysteries of the Dark Goddess. Ritual is for dancers and non-dancers alike; all are welcome.

Reservations are required. To do so please email dina@thedanicnggypsy.com or call 508-885-3639."

Raks Spooki IV--now with performer list!

Raks Spooki IV: A Gothic Belly Dance Event
presented by Badriya al-Badi'a

Sunday, November 15, 7pm
The Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington, MA
Tickets: $17, available at the Regent Theatre box office or at the door
http://regenttheatre.com/events/Raks_Spooki.htm

If Halloween is the time when the boundaries between worlds are opened, Raks Spooki is the time to see what has slipped through the veils and stayed in this world! Come see all aspects of the darker side of belly dance explored at the fourth annual Raks Spooki, from the elegantly enigmatic to the morbidly macabre to the archly humorous to the utterly unclassifiable. This year's roster of performers draws from a variety of belly dance backgrounds from the traditional to the tribal and include: Aepril Schaile, Ameena, Aneckha, Aradia, Aria Beth Michaels, Atropos (Baseema), Badriya al-Badi'a, Bellastygma, Di'Ahna, Ela Rogers, Eugenia, Johara's Snakedance Theatre, Katrina, Naomi, Neylan, Qamar, Sabrina, Sabrina L., Samara, Selcouth, Tassellations, Tempest and Vadalna Tribal Dance Company. As the standing-room-only audiences of previous years can attest, this is a show you will not soon forget!

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Women for Women (www.womenforwomen.org/ ), a non-profit organization which helps women in war-torn regions of the world get back on their feet and start rebuilding their lives. Currently, they are focused on Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Kosovo, Rwanda, Colombia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some of these are places where our dance movements, costuming and jewelry come from. Using what women of the world have given us from our relative place of peace and safety, we can make real differences in the lives of other women. In exercising our freedom to dance in this country, we can help women around the world gain their own freedom from war, poverty and injustice.

Badriya is an Arlington-based performer of both gothic and traditional Arabic belly dance styles. For more information, see

"Journey to the Underworld" - Special Samhain Workshop Presentation

Journey to the Underworld
A special 3 hour workshop experience with Tempest

When was the last time you broke down your own facades and explored the truth of what lays bare underneath? Are you brave enough to look and become stronger as a dancer for it? Being a part of the bellydance community for any length of time affects us in so many ways, many below the surface that can influence how we look and feel about ourselves and others. In this dynamic and unusual workshop, we will explore through exercises and movement combinations the mythic concept of the Descent and Encounter in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian cultures. This is a safe and supportive opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically, while discovering who you are or wish to be as a dancer. Warning: This is not a "woo-woo" or "new-agey" class, but it will ask you to push your boundaries.

When: Saturday, October 31st, 2009, from 11-2pm (actual workshop time)
Why is it on Halloween? For many traditions and cultures around the world, at this time of the year, they believe the veils between this world and the next are thin or lifted. Hence why we see many references to the dead, spirits, and the macabre, ancestor recognition and revelry, etc. It is also considered to be the end of the Wheel of the Year, so a good time to finish things up and start anew.
Where: Middle of Nowhere Studio, Coventry, RI (address will be sent to registrants) (off of exit 6)
How Much: $45 for the 3 hour workshop by 10/18, $55 afterwards plus there will be an optional outdoor ritual working afterwards. The workshop is limited to 10 students ONLY.
What To Wear/Bring: Comfy dance attire, water, snack. Allergy meds if you're allergic to cats.
Coming from out of town? There are two hotels (Super 8 and a Bester Western) a few minutes from the studio location, and right off the freeway at exit 6 (Nooseneck Hill Road). Folks who may be making a week/weekend out of their New England trip may want to consider hotels in downtown Providence as well.
Additional activities: There are Halloween festivities that evening in Coventry that workshop students (and their partners/friends) are welcome to participate in, and we'll be taking a trip up to Salem, Mass on Sunday, and y'all are welcome to join the caravan up and enjoy the day with us.
About Tempest:
Tempest pulls from her visual arts background (BFA from RISD), literary tendencies, and global inspirations to create dance that crosses the boundaries of time and culture. Tempest began her journey into dance in 2000, and has traveled the country to study traditional, folkloric, and fusion forms of bellydance. She is the premiere instructor of Gothic Bellydance in North America, and her extensive work in the genre has helped to define and develop the movement across the world. Her compelling performances exemplify her distinctively theatrical and expressive style, and are rooted in oriental dance technique with a transcendent approach. Her costume designs have revolutionized the look of modern bellydance, and continue to inspire new and old generations of dancers alike.

In addition to her dance background, Tempest is an ordained minister in the Modern Tradition of Witchcraft, and has been a community leader, teacher, and guide in the New England and Bay Area Pagan communities for well over a dozen years. She is passionate about creating positive community by addressing the needs and concerns (physical, mental, emotional, metaphysical) of the individual.
this is my firts forum post!

I just want to present my site www.gothicbellydanceitalia.com the official site for gothic bellydance in italy.

We publish videos, events, classes and the profiles of the italian goth bellydancers.

A friend of mine wants to write his first choreography and asked if I would lend a hand. He told me the name of his song so that I could give a listen and help him fulfill his creative vision. As I was listening to it I found myself wondering how many other dancers have danced to this piece. Which then got my wheels turning and I had to ask... what songs have been done to death? What are the most widely danced to pieces of music in the genre of GBD? I'll tell you the number one around here is Living Dead Girl. :-P

I see mini top hats EVERYWHERE! But I want a normal sized, decent quality top hat. And I don't want to sacrifice a small child to get one ('cause I'm fresh out!) Any suggestions? besides etsy, ebay etc...

Descent: Dances of the Dark Goddess: DESIRE

It has been told since the time before remembrance...
Each and every year, the Goddess makes her Descent into the Underworld.
The Dark Goddess...ancient and eternal aspect of the Divine Feminine, modern archetypal force. A figure of worship, awe, horror, fascination; a force ofdestruction, creation, beauty, death, sex, rebirth...

In the season ruled by Hades, during the darkening of the moon and the waning of the year: The Dark Queen and the Madwoman, the Temple Priestess and the Sacred Harlot, The Destroyer and the Lover, the Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt, the dance of forces that live within every woman: romance, innocence, fear, darkness, danger, rage, passion, DESIRE...behold some of the darkly feminine themes explored by the artists of Descent...
gothic and gothic belly dance friendly areas

My wife and I are contemplating moving to another area. We live in the middle of Kansas and really don't like it. We're looking for an area that is gothic and gothic belly dance friendly.
We would like to move to an area where she can get lots of bookings for dancing in various clubs and theaters. I'd like to be in an area which has a club that does a goth/industry night. We'd prefer not ot live in the big city but in a smaller town that's very close to a bigger city.
Another limiting factor would be that I have asthma and so very wet and humid areas are out of the question. Mold and lots of vegetation like in the south drives my asthma crazy. My wife has rheumatoid arthritis so areas that are very humid or very cold are out of the question as it really causes her entire body to swell up and hurt.
Hopefully these limitations don't come up with limiting the number of suggestions.
Thanks,
Frank

What to do when you have a costume malfunction during a performance.

I know this has happened to many people, myself included, and it always eats a bag of poo.
Since people are always asking advice, I figured I'd help 'em out, being an AMAZING experienced dancer and all...

There are two things you must stockpile at your house:
1. safety pins
2. bobby pins

I play the game How Many Pins Can I Have On My Body after I finish. The higher the number, the SAFER.
Well, except for last night...

Last night I wore my hair down for a performance.
WHAT?!?!!!! Don't tribal girls have to pile 5 kilos (bless the metric system, the only way to go) of shit on their heads? No. No you don't. Just AVOID THE FOREHEAD BAND. It's illegal, punishable by Death.
Anyhoo, I attached some extensions to my head with toupee clips to add some red and volume. 3 wefts is enough, but one of the wefts was not secured with bobby pins. This was a BAD IDEA.
Evidently, during some whip turns I looked down and low & behold my hair had parted from my head and was lying on the stage like roadkill. My performance (to live music) was only halfway through, so without time to figure what to do, I gracefully scooped it off the floor and STUCK IT DOWN MY PANTS. Yes, I did. And as I was sticking it down my pants I looked at the audience and said, 'Yes, I'm really doing this." and smiled. With my new shiny pubic weft, I continued to dance, accentuating it with strong hip movements and sly arm gestures. It went well. Then I snatched (heh, heh) the hair out of my pants and tucked in my bra at my armpit. I made a French face and continued with strong chest movements. It was beautiful. Next, I found a bald guy. Luckily, one of the band members was bald. I placed the hair piece on his head and continued dancing.
Since the worst had already happened, it was time to figure out what else could go wrong. Experimentation is the best way to go, people. I started whipping my hair around so that any black metal band would have been proud. The rest of the hair pieces stayed on. My hypothesis was correct: You must place bobby pins on your head regardless of what hair accessories you're wearing as if you are dressing up like a Cenobite. (if you don't know what that is, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenobite_(Hellraiser) YOU'RE FIRED.)

What did we learn from this excursion?
1. when in doubt, pin the bejesus out of it.
2. find the bald guy.
3. never panic.
4. shoving things down your pants always makes everything better.

*this message has been brought to you by someone else. not me. ignore my avatar. I'm a LADY. I don't do dirty things.*

PS. yes i do.

New Bordello Boots by Pleaser does anyone know if they run small, big or to size?

Found THE pair of boots but they are online only and I have the most awkward feet for boots. They are the new Bordello Boots by Pleaser. I keep hearing they run big and small and I only have 5 weeks to the performance and dont have enough time to buy and send back for a differentt size.

They are the black and red Victorian button spat front low heel boots

Anyone know if they run to size and if not whether they run small or big? I normally take a UK 4 but have a broadish foot and a narrow heel which is my curse!

Are there any dancers out there [out here in SF, rather] who would like to get dressed in full PINK costume, and have a group for the Walk for Hope, to raise awareness/money for research for Breast Cancer here in SF on October 3? (This is a personal cause for me, so i do what i can wherever i am.) Please PM me if you are interested! (i can supply pink costume pieces too...)

new troupe....gah!!!

I'm thinking of starting a troupe here in Augusta, Georgia. I've been a member of the goth scene here for some time and have been bellydancing for a few years. My main problem is, all of the dancers I want to work with....I'm unsure if I can get the right feel from them. Good grief that sounds stuck up. But I want a playful/serious mix...can I just import Alicia from Bellycraft here?

Any suggestions on how to work through this?

Also, please look at DarkAugusta.net...my husband runs this site and occasionally posts podcasts of SE djs....

ok...I have been scouring teh interwebs and CANNOT find this image. It is a skull and crossbones with tribal hair falls. Is it an older Romka design? Am I crazy? I know for a fact that I am not creative enough to have dreamed this up...

Hi all,

I kept forgetting to bring this up since I joined this tribe. I started a Gothic Bellydance tag on last.fm some time ago since there wasn't one, and it's been slowly growing. I thought I'd see if there were any last.fm members here interested in helping build it up. So far there's 12 different people who have contributed and it's always fun to hear what other music people like to belly dance to on the dark side of the spectrum.
I am working on a new dance set and I have some slower music tracks but I really need a med/fast piece of music with a Dark-Asian flavour.
Anything that includes hints of Japanese, Balinese, Javanese, Chinese would be ideal. Oh and I already have the Solace CDs so am looking for something else. Any suggestions?
Cheers :o)

Raks Spooki IV, Nov. 15, Arlington, MA!

Mark your calendars...

Raks Spooki IV!
Sunday, November 15, 7:30pm
The Regent Theatre (upstairs on the big stage!)
7 Medford Street
Arlington, MA
tickets are not yet on sale but an announcement will be made as soon as they are

Now accepting applications for performers--due to the limited number of performance slots and high interest in performing, I cannot guarantee that every applicant will be able to perform. (In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that not every applicant will be able to perform, which is why I will be holding a more informal gothic hafli in spring 2010, open on a first come, first serve basis.) Selections will be made first and foremost on the basis of presenting a diverse program with a variety of styles and artistic visions. Applications should include:

1. Your dance name and real name, if different (troupes, provide troupe name and a main contact person)

2. Complete contact information

3. Your performance concept, including music choice, 6 minutes maximum --->remember, this is a *gothic* event! You
don't have to be a regular performer of gothic belly dance, but your concept for Raks Spooki should have something
gothic about it.

4. Link to video clip online, or contact me about mailing me a DVD. If I have seen you perform before this is not
necessary, but please do not assume that if we were in a show together that I was able to see you--check first.
This does not have to be video of the project you have in mind for Raks Spooki but should be representative of your
dancing in general.

Please email me directly at badriya at rcn dot com with your application and do not send it via Tribe, Facebook, LiveJournal or other social networking site. I will however accept delivery via messenger bats ;-)

Deadline for applications is August 31, and notifications of selection will go out by September 6.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions--as always, I am looking forward to the wonderful performances this community produces, and all the more so now that we're back on the big stage!

shimmy spookily,

Music suggestion needed: Kali

I have a routine in mind for an upcoming GBD show--at least, I have the persona, costume, and sword ideas pretty solid. I don't, however, have a good goth piece of music for performing sword to, and more importantly...nothing that makes me think of the goddess Kali.
Ideally, it would have some Indian influence in it--I've been going through my Solace music, and nothing is really grabbing me.

Thoughts?
Artists or tracks you might suggest for me for this?

What is ‘Fusion Belly Dance’?

Fusion can mean many things to many people. I like the vagueness of the word… It leaves a lot of room to experiment and find your own voice. To me, it is mixing different styles and genres of music and dance into the dancer’s own individual interpretation and expression of their art form. My own personal stylization, or Fusion, is a mix of Tribal Fusion, Hip Hop bits I love to use, and something I call ‘Gooey-gothic’, which is something I’ve sort of created over the last year of performing in an Industrial Art & Music show.

About the workshop:

We will be jumping down the rabbit hole of ‘Fusion Belly Dance’ each week, where I will share the foundations of my favorite moves, explore stylization and touch on subjects like; musicality in dance, and intent in performance. I hope to challenge and inspire you to think outside the belly dance box and discover your own groove, with exercises in breaking the rules, listening to your body, and increasing your intuition.

This is an intermediate to advanced class focusing on my own funky stylization. This is treated like an intensive and we will be moving fairly quickly. I won’t be teaching any ATS or Cabaret, so it is essential that the students already have a basic knowledge of belly dance mechanics as taught in some of the more traditional disciplines, so we can move beyond the basics and get to the juicy stuff. There are many wonderful teachers to learn from first to build a solid foundation. Essentially, I want you to know the rules before I tell you how to break them!

To read more about my history, check out my bio, look at pictures or videos of past shows, go to: www.sisterserpentine.com

Hope to see you there!! ~medea~

Working on finalizing details for Samhain (Halloween) weekend intensive - a 3 hour workshop of "Journey to the Underworld", working ritual in the woods in southern RI, and a trip to Salem, MA on Sunday, limited to 10 participants - A fantastic way to spend this weekend in beautiful Fall-kissed New England!

If you are interested in participating, please drop me a note (tempest(at)meddevi.com) - btw, local folks can participate as much or as little (ie, just the workshop) as they would like if you have other Halloween responsibilities, and plenty of flexibility for out of town folks too :)

PLEASE double-check your html and make sure the URL's are set to these exact addresses! My web server has done some updates, so the URLs are reading true, but if you've linked to something like meddevi.com/gothicbellydance or meddevi.com/tempest - you will get an error message, because they don't exist with the new upgrade. The sites are definitely up and functioning, but you need to have the correct URL - thank you!

I'm also currently re-working both the GBDR and Med'Devi Ink, so stay tuned for new sites soon.

Need help with a Voodoo inspired solo

SO here I am stuck in the UK and DESPERATE to do a Voodoo themed number for my next solo, I have already ruled out the theme tune to Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney, unless anyone knows of a cooler more macabre version out there. I am thinking full blown Baron Samedi , scare the hell out of em but cool and stylish. SO no fake blood rubber snakes etc,

I am looking for either ideas or resources for Costume, music, makeup and props. I like the feel of the crescendo (bad spelling) and musical pyro of Live and Let Die but want something edgier

Any help gratefully received x

Grrr Costume and Hair!

So, last time I had to buy a costume I lived in Miami. Now I am here in Illinois and there's no place in the area to shop. I'm wondering if anyone has any online recommendations for what I need. Here's the specifics...some pieces I'll be making. (Yes, i cross posted. Sorry for any tribe spam!)
* Flared yoga/jazz pants
* Bum cover or ruffle or half skirt (depending on what you call it)
* Belt...the belt is iffy yet. I know I want a "standard" tribal style belt but I may make something to go with it or tassles.

Next...my hair! The last time I danced, my hair was hip length. Let's fast forward to now. I've cut it off and given the hair to Locks of Love. I now have a graduated bob. Can't very well put falls in those! I can't even gather enough for a small ponytail. What do I do with it? I was thinking making something to clip some small pieces of hair into it or maybe just popping a decorative clip in it. Any suggestions?

Intense, gothy traveling moves...help please!

So I have picked the first piece I will be doing choreography to. It will be "Dark Lantern" by Mandragora Scream.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz7ksIME6tE
I know where I want to travel, but I am not sure which traveling moves are the most STRONG, or intense. Anyone have links to videos or anything that could help me here? <3

So far my biggest inspiration has been Asharah's TF08 choreo to Drumcorps' "Grist".

New gothic music

I was looking at my music the other day and I realized that most of my gothic music is getting to be quite old. Most of the stuff I have is 80s to 90s era. I'm trying to find a couple songs for me to do as performance pieces. I figure that if I do older music it will turn people off since they've heard it and seen it so many times.
The new music that I've been getting is mainly symphonic metal (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica), Electronica (Maduro, Solace), indie (Cruxshadows, Lacuna Coil), Industial (Skinny Puppy, Apoptygma Berzerk), and traditional belly dance music (Hossam Ramzy, Hakim).
There really isn't much of a scene where I live so I haven't been to the clubs or really had a chance to talk to people about what they're listening to these days.
I used to be involved in the scene in Manhattan (that's Kansas not NY) before it collapsed about 8 years ago. I recently learned that there's a small group of very young goths (teens with a couple of college agers) that are trying to get the scene started again and went to one of their gatherings. When I talked music I was pretty shocked with what I heard is considered gothic music these days. I said that I mainly listened to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Switchblade Symphony, and Dead Can Dance. The repsonse that I got tended to be "how can you listen to that emo poser s**t". Is it true that those groups and that type of sound is considered emo and not gothic these days? They said that groups like Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Taylor Swift are what are reaaly big in the scene these days. Is this true?
If that's what's considered goth then I'll take my emo poser stuff and if not could all of you give me the names of some new goth groups?
Thanks,
Frank

steampunk tribal costume

you my see photos in my pics
This is a hand made costume. The bra and belt are both lined. The bra will fit a 34 B/C. The bra is very sturdy and will hold its shape very well. This costume is one of my original designs. This costume will work well for a new students, hobbyist or the more seasoned performer. Can be used for tribal, tribal fusion, steam punk, fantasy, vintage fusion, burlesque, or club ware.

The bra will fit a 34 B/C. The bra is covered in a black and gray pin stripped type fabric. Has a real men's ware flare to it. The bra has a pink and green vintage type of gimp trim across the top . The bra is adorned with a pendant with a white stone and pink rhinestones. It also has faux pearls and a pink strand on seed bead loop hanging center front. The neck straps are 45 inches long. The bra will tie crisscross across the back with the use of D-rings

The belt is covered in the same fabric as the bra. Across the top and the bottom of the belt it has the same trim as the bra. The belt is also adorned with chain with faux pearls, coins and heart shaped pendants. The rag fringe is made from an assortment of yarns, lace and fabric. The rag fringe will hand the length of the skirt. The belt also has a 3 loop swag of faux pearls on each side of the belt
The belt is 32 inches long not including the tie ends, The tie ends are about 16 inches long.

Once again both pieces are line and this is my original design. Please email with any questions or more photos 80.00

An Open Letter to the Buffalo Bellydance Community

An open letter to the Buffalo Bellydance Community

It has come to my attention that misinformation has been spread regarding the Durga Tour stop in Buffalo on June 13th , unjustly impacting the event and I feel the best way to deal with it at this time is to take the matter to the larger community and clear the air. I ask you to take a few moments to read the following to help clear any misunderstandings.

The Buffalo Durga Tour stop will take place on June 13th at The Bellydance Academy, and features workshops in the day with myself (Tempest), Asharah, and musician Tim Rayborn, followed by a show in the evening. This will be the second time the Durga Tour will visit Buffalo – the last being in 2006, which was a great stop for us, so we’re looking forward to coming to you again.

The Durga Tour was created in 2006 to bring Gothic and Experimental/Fusion bellydance workshops and performances to cities all across the US. We did 25 states in 40 days. The 2009 tour expands on our base concept even further, focusing on fusion bellydance with integrity, community balance and growth, and musical interaction, and spans over 30 stops from May 1st – June 16th. It is designed to be accessible to ALL styles and levels of dancers, and for communities to work together, putting drama aside in favor of benefiting our beautiful art. From the beginning planning stages, sponsors for the tour are specifically asked to work together with other leaders, teachers, and troupes in their community and beyond – to put aside personal and stylistic differences to make an event possible that benefits all.

Putting together a tour of this scale is not an easy task. It takes an enormous amount of coordination, mapping, planning, and negotiating – not only between myself and the sponsors of the stops, but also with the guest artists who come on the tour with us, and local dancers/performers and musicians – spanning nearly a year of preparation, with the months leading up to the tour being a constant rain of communication with literally hundreds of individuals. But I believe it is all worth it, for the experience and opportunity of being able to bring our ideas and art on a smaller, more affordable scale to towns and cities all across the US – especially to dancers who can’t make it to the bigger festivals. Their appreciation and gratitude is simply astounding and a constant reminder that we’re on track, especially when one is used to a community that has a lot of resources on hand.

But there’s also a lot at stake, and again, being on tour is no easy task. There’s a lot of money involved in keeping the van running and full of gas, honoring contracts and time commitments, functioning on a lot of fast food, long hours on the road, and minimal sleep. It takes a huge amount of effort not only on our part to make every stop successful, but also requires the community as well to take part and take responsibility, in order to make it successful for all involved.

So getting the reason why I’m writing this letter to you. I have read firsthand accounts of libelous statements being made against myself, the event sponsors, and the tour, and heard direct accounts of similar slander from numerous community members, which are impacting the success of the stop, essentially satisfying the intent of the misinformation and ill-will being spread. Now, personal opinions in private blogs are one thing, but when I have other professional dancers and friends around the nation coming up to me going “What the heck is going on in Buffalo!?” that is not only something for me to be concerned about, but YOU as well. Issues between local dancers are sadly the norm everywhere, but your national reputation is being impacted.

In a nutshell, I refused to get involved in an un-related business conflict between a studio owner and troupe, who were working together to make the Buffalo stop happen. I asked both parties to please do their best to work it out, and not to bring myself or the Durga Tour into the disagreement. Previous to their disagreement, the contract for the stop had been signed with the studio owner, and deposit secured for it, securing the stop in the Durga Tour schedule. The issue was escalated emotionally, and I was urged by the troupe to cancel the stop, which at that time in late April, was not feasible, reasonable, or frankly, professional on my part. I don’t cancel stops due to drama, regardless of who is involved, especially when a stop concerns several other individuals besides myself (Asharah and Tim Rayborn). That is simply not good business. Both the studio owner and I separately encouraged the troupe to still participate and be involved in whatever way they wished, putting other issues aside for the spirit of the Durga Tour and community. And as I departed for the tour, that is where things were left from my perspective, and I sent another request for cooperation and working things out. Being on tour now since May 1st, I have had little time for anything else, besides a few moments online here and there when I can snag it, but yet still I have received rumblings of sabotage because I refused to get involved in drama. This is mind-boggling to me – I simply don’t understand this sort of behavior, and while I can withstand a great deal of pummeling when it comes to me personally, this affecting more people than just myself. It is affecting other members of the tour, your local community, and again, your reputation in the larger bellydance community. If this stop is ultimately cancelled (something I am working hard against preventing, taking extra energy out of the touring schedule to put towards this), the repercussions will be far greater than just one event that didn’t happen. It will be a lot harder to get artists outside of your community to come back – and this is not hearsay or a threat, but what I heard directly from other dance professionals at festivals and events taking place in the last month. And that would truly be a great detriment to any bellydance community.

So I ask of you, members of the Buffalo Bellydance community, to be above the drama. Please don’t let misinformation make YOU miss out on a special opportunity. And I want to make it very known that EVERYONE is invited to participate in the events on June 13th, but only if you’re willing to leave the drama at the door and get down to some serious celebration of our dance.

Thank you for your time and consideration

Blessings,
Tempest

I am performing my first solo in 3 weeks....

i have decided to use my sword and do some sword dancing but im not sure on something.
i want to use the song river of tuoni by amberian dawn.
now my plan is to either have a short 2 min. song with sword dancing, then it goes into that song by amberian dawn and i put the sword down....or i start out wuith amberian dawn then i pick up the sword and do the last 2 min. to another song .....

which do you think is a better transition? sword first..or last...

also i need help finding a short 1min50 maybe 2 min. song that is somewhat ethnic/tribal but gothy......any suggestions???

Please recommend Gothic music for duet or trio...

I'm looking for fabulously gothic and dark and dramatic music for a duet or trio for bellydance, but which would be suitable for both oriental and gothic moves. Either dark versus light (I rather like this idea) with darkness overcoming, or both dark and gothic but with also an elegant oriental feel. We're both traditionally trained in Egyptian but would like to add the gothic side. Does anyone have any good suggestions for music to use which is no longer than approx 4 mins?

Motif is back!

Last year, we initiated Motif after a desire to create a communal and interactive event that would bring people together with a founation in Middle Eastern music, dance, and trance - kicking off the Tribal Fest weekend with something that that would invigorate your body, mind, and spirit. Participants were enthralled and begged us to do it again - so you asked for it, here it is!

Motif is an experimental gathering, merging music, dance, and ritual, limited to only 40 participants. It will take place in the large classroom at the Youth Annex in Sebastopol, CA (part of the TF9 grounds). Please arrive promptly BY 8pm, and expect to participate until 10pm (no late arrivals, no in/out). This is NOT a performance - it is a communal interaction led by Lee Ali, Tempest, and Karim Nagi. The event will have a formal beginning to awaken our space, and will be guided throughout the evening by the lead dancers and musicians, and have a formal conclusion.

Participants are welcome to bring rugs, pillows, and beverages. Musicians are also welcome to bring their instruments, dancers - come prepared to dance!

Tickets are $10 per person, please use the link below to secure yours now! Once they're sold out, that's it!

Durga Tour - Portland, OR - need your feedback!

Ok folks, have a new space we're looking at Portland, OR, for the afternoon of Sunday, May 24th. Gotta do at least 4 hours, so I need to know from y'all, what do you want? Workshops? a show? a little of both? Looking at mid/late afternoon, like from 2 or 3pm on, but it won't end too late, even though it's Memorial Day the next time. I need your input to help plan this, as we don't have an official sponsor/organizer for this stop. (If anyone would like to help out, please LMK! - special perks :))

For info on the rest of the tour, visit http://www.meddevi.com/durga

Tempest in Columbia, SC

Wednesday, May 6th--Tempest

Columbia is proud to be a stop on Tempest's Durga Tour! This workshop will take place in the place of our normal basics class at 711 E. Main St. in Lexington, in the CDE studios in the basement of the old mill. Cash or check at the door, or pay ahead of time via paypal to natalie_c_brown at yahoo dot com.

Tempest started her exploration of dance in early 2000 on the East Coast. She quickly found belly dance to be incredibly rewarding not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally, as well as a source of inspiration for her visual art.

Although she enjoys what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance. By working (playing) outside of the box, Tempest engages the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling , passionate expression, and sensuous, mezmerizing movement. She particularly enjoys performing Raks Gothique, also known as Gothic Belly Dance, and sacred-fusion forms of belly dance.

Strange Presence – 7:30-9:30 PM, $30

It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead. A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves—it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We’ll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more “in the moment.” This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

While I am in the Bay Area, post TF9, on May 18th-19th, I will have some availability to teach private lessons (based out of Hayward).

Some folks have also asked about private lesson availability on other spots on the tour. It will depend on how much time we have available, and what the space is (whether studio space is available, or room at the hotel), but please do email or msg me if you're interested so we can sort things out ahead of time and see if it's possible.

Being gothic in gothic bellydance?

One point that was brought up in the keeping bellydance in GBD was that gothic is an idea or concept. The thing with concepts is that everyone has their own idea of what that concept is. I've noticed this is particularly true about goths and defining what is gothic. That seems to be one of the most important things these days in the gothic community. Whenever goths gather it seems that the main topic is who is really a goth and who is a poser and then publically point out to those deemed to be a poser as to why they are not a goth.
When I ask someone about what makes a person a goth I usually get the response that being a goth means that you're dark and that by asking that question I'm showing that I'm a norm and will never understand what is means to be goth.
Given that, I'll give what I view as the gothic element in GBD. Now keep in mind that this is from a norm or poser as some would say who goes about in daylight, doesn't wear black all the time, is not a pagan, doesn't do psychaedelic drugs, doesn't like Sangria, isn't bisexual, is monogomous and doesn't participate in the goth piles, doesn't wear eyeliner and makeup all the time, don't dye my hair black, enjoys the company of all types of people, gets along with relatives, and uses his real name.
To me the gothic element is looking within yourself and seeing that a Ted Bundy or a Hannibal Lector lies in there beneath the surface. Then instead of rejecting that aspect of yourself you embrace it, not in the way of becoming someone like that but by integrating that into you and then letting the darker tragic part of it out while keeping the evil locked away. You can then see beauty in things such as HR Giger works and you can see things like Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera as tragedies rather than horror because you can understand and empathise with the creatures. You can see beauty in tragedy and that can be channeled into art and dance. The taking the tragic feelings, empathy, and sympathetic feelings that reside in all of us and projecting that into the dance is what I feel makes the gothic part of bellydance.
I'm probably going to be told like I usually do that that is so not gothic but like I said gothic is an idea and ideas differ from person to person. What do some of the rest of you see as the gothic element in gothic bellydance? I know its probably too much to ask but please don't rip others definitions to shreds. By keeping an open mind and not dismissing others ideas immediately we gain a greater understanding of ourself and other and we are enriched by that.

I'm putting together a dark hafla in Denver, and I'm at the stage where I need to start designing fliers. I need some sort of gothic bellydance clipart to use... but something copyright-free. Does anyone know of any pictures that are public domain, or have any they wouldn't mind being plastered across a city?

Thanks!!

Tempest in DC - April 11th

Date: Saturday, April 11, 2009
Time: 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Location: Saffron Dance Studio
Street: 260 Wilson Blvd
City/Town: Arlington, VA

Tempest comes to Arlington, Virginia, to share two workshops aimed at the performing dancer: "Journey to the Underworld" and "Strange Presence."

Journey to the Underworld – When’s the last time you broke down your own facades and explored the truth of what lays bare underneath? Are you brave enough to look and become stronger as a dancer for it? Being a part of the bellydance community for any length of time affects us in so many ways, many below the surface that can influence how we look and feel about ourselves and others. In this dynamic and unusual workshop, we will explore through exercises and movement combinations the mythic concept of the Descent and Encounter in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian cultures. This is a safe and supportive opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically, while discovering who you are or wish to be as a dancer. Warning: This is not a “woo-woo” or “new-agey” class, but it will ask you to push your boundaries.

Strange Presence – It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead.

Workshops will be followed by a ritual dance dedication to friend, dancer, and artist Kaihea at the Palace of Wonders. A portion of the proceeds from the workshops will benefit Kaihea's partner and cats.

TF9 - Tempest's classes

Since these are two brand-new workshops, I wanted to give y'all a little more background - and remind ya that both my workshops sold out well before the festival last year!

On Thursday evening (aptly before "Motif" - details on that will be announced later), I will be teaching "Journey to the Underworld" - Class Description:When's the last time you broke down your own facades and explored the truth of what lays bare underneath? Are you brave enough to look and become stronger as a dancer for it? Being a part of the bellydance community for any length of time affects us in so many ways, many below the surface that can influence how we look and feel about ourselves and others. In this dynamic and unusual workshop, we will explore through exercises and movement combinations the mythic concept of the Descent and Encounter in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Indian cultures. This is a safe and supportive opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically, while discovering who you are or wish to be as a dancer. Warning: This is not a "woo-woo" or "new-agey" class, but it will ask you to push your boundaries.

Summary: This ain't your typical workshop, and I don't expect it will be attractive to many newbies. Rather, this is geared to the intermediate/advanced dancer who has been involved in the community/performing/etc for a few years (or many). This will be both a physically and emotionally demanding workshop which challenge your self-perceptions and placement in the community - and in turn aid you in becoming a stronger, more confident dancer. This is purposely a small-size workshop with less than 20 spaces available for more interpersonal work. If you're searching to define your style, to become more present on stage, to set up a better regiment for yourself that approaches you wholly, or perhaps tired of the "community struggle" and how it sucks the life out of you - this workshop is for you.

Saturday evening: "Adventures in Steampunk!" Class description: Class Description:
Steampunk is considered by many to be a subdivision of the Gothic Culture, or it's crazy next-door neighbor - regardless, it's an exciting and inspiring genre, blending Neo-Victorian, Science Fiction, and Fantasy that offers a lot of opportunity in the realm of bellydance fusion. But once again, it's not about just having the look, but capturing the feel and quality of Steampunk in your movement and presentation. Students will explore several scenarios/personas through from fabulous, fast, and fun to super sultry and sassy mini-choreographies infused with the essence of Steampunk, while learning about concept, music, and fashion behind this genre as well.

Summary - Want to mix the future and the past? Want that classic feel, strong persona on stage, and have fun without being cheesy? Oh, and want to have a ton of fun doing it? Those of you who have taken Nouveau Noir dance and know how much fun that workshop is - this one tops it! We'll cover history, both fact and fiction, the same time we're exploring Steampunk personas through fun, fast, and fabulous combinations that you won't see anywhere else! Imagine that, actually getting history/background while learning how and why to do it! ;))
